Head of the Research Group - Composite Structures

Considering the constant evolution of novel material systems and expanding of their integration into diverse structural applications, we aim to refine the comprehensive knowledge of instability and failure processes. Structural failure, including compression after impact and fatigue after impact, poses critical challenges in wind and aerospace structures. While buckling primarily affects the overall stability of a component, damage influences its mechanical performance. The interplay between these factors is crucial in understanding how even seemingly minor defects can amplify the risk of buckling or, conversely, how buckling can exacerbate existing damage.

The research aims to develop efficient tools for buckling and damage, predicting structural instability, identification of damage, and the propagation thereof under various loading conditions, spanning multiple scales across a wide array of structural systems. The multidisciplinary approach seamlessly integrates experimental techniques, numerical methods, reduced order models and analytical tools to explore, simulate, and validate the physical behavior.
